How our pricing works
We use interchange-plus pricing: you pay the card networks’ wholesale cost, plus one small markup you can see on every statement. That’s the whole model.
What actually happens when a card is charged
Interchange is the wholesale fee set by Visa, Mastercard, and the card-issuing banks — the same for every processor. The only part a processor controls is the markup on top. We keep ours small, fixed, and printed on your statement.
Interchange — set by Visa, Mastercard, and the issuing banks. Identical for every processor; nobody gets a better deal on this part. We pass it through at cost.
Small and fixed — never buried in a blended rate. It's the only part of your cost we control, so it's the only line we ask you to judge us on.
Deposited to your bank account on the funding schedule in your agreement, with every fee itemized on a statement you can read.
Your exact numbers depend on your card mix — that’s why we quote from a real statement, not a rate card.
What you’ll never pay
These are the fees that quietly inflate an effective rate at other processors. At Puna Pay, every one of them is zero.

The three ways processors price — compared honestly
Each model can be right for someone. Flat rate is simplest at very low volume; above roughly $20k/month, transparency usually wins.
Flat rate
One blended percentage on every card, whatever it actually costs to process.
Best under ~$5k/month in card volume.
Tiered
Transactions sorted into "qualified," "mid-" and "non-qualified" buckets, each with its own rate.
Rarely the right answer for anyone.
Interchange-plus
The card networks' wholesale cost, passed through at cost, plus one fixed markup you can see.
Best at $20k+/month, where transparency compounds.
What the comparison includes
The comparison is written, so you can read it, share it and check it. It sets out:
- your current cost, as you reported it (volume, fees and effective rate);
- the pricing we would propose, with interchange and our markup shown on separate lines;
- any other fees or equipment costs that apply;
- the assumptions behind the comparison and anything we could not verify; and
- the setup we would recommend for your equipment and software.
Our markup is the part of your cost that Puna Pay earns, on top of interchange. It appears as its own line so you can judge it directly.
A markup of 0.5 percentage points on $20,000 of monthly card volume would be $100 a month, or $1,200 a year, before any other costs. Your own figures will differ.
Will Puna Pay work with your setup?
It depends on what you use today. Here is how we describe each case. Tell us your POS or software in the rate review and we will say plainly which one applies.
- Confirmed integration
- Bittsi PIMS, our veterinary practice software, is a confirmed integration with Puna Pay. This is the only third-party software we name as integrated.
- Standalone terminal
- A card terminal that works on its own, next to whatever POS or software you already use. You key or enter the amount on the terminal; it is not linked to your software.
- Browser-based tools
- Virtual terminal and payment links you open in a web browser. They do not require your POS or software to connect to us.
- Setup requiring review
- Anything else — a specific POS, an e-commerce platform, existing hardware you want to keep. Whether it works depends on the model, configuration and provisioning, so we review it before saying yes or no.
From request to decision, in five steps
- 1
Send a few numbers
Tell us your business type, monthly card-processing volume and, if you have them, last month’s fees and current software. No statements, card numbers or bank details.
- 2
We review your information
A person looks at what you sent. If something is unclear, or your volume is under $20,000 a month or uncertain, we may ask follow-up questions.
- 3
You get a written comparison
It shows your current cost alongside the pricing we would propose, including our markup as a separate line, plus the assumptions behind it.
- 4
You decide
If your current pricing is competitive, we will say so. There is no obligation to switch.
- 5
Setup, only if you proceed
If you choose to move forward, we confirm your equipment and software setup and walk through onboarding before anything changes.
Tell us what you pay. We’ll show you where you stand.
Share a few numbers from your last month and we’ll review them and send a written comparison. If your current pricing is competitive, we’ll say so. We don’t accept statements, card numbers or bank details.
- No documents needed — just a few numbers
- A written comparison, with the assumptions behind it
- No obligation to switch
